A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes

Do you see that little face?

This little tiny India was just 3 years old on her
first trip to Disneyland in 1995.

India fell in love with Disneyland,
and everything about it on that trip.

She used to say
"When I grow up, I want to LIVE in Disneyland."

Well GUESS WHAT!!

She gets to do just that!!

Well, maybe not exactly LIVE there,

BUT.....

in January, she will be starting at the Disney College Program

in Anaheim!!

She got the call last week and sent her acceptance

just a few hours later!

So, what will India be doing at the Disney College Program?

Well, her actual job at Disneyland during the program will be

"Attraction Hostess".

Translation: She will most likely be making sure that
guests are tall enough for the ride,
making sure they are buckled safely and following instructions,
and maybe even pushing the buttons to start the fun!!

In addition, she will be taking classes for credit and
taking part in seminars facilitated
by various vice presidents of the Disney companies.

She will live in dorms there with other DCPers,
and having the time of her life!

We are so proud of our girl for getting into this
fabulous program!!

Now.....back to my packing......

Simplicity 2591-India's "Alice" Dress

India is in love with Alice......and Wonderland.....and the Looking Glass.....and anything else to do with the stories of Lewis Carroll. She insists on referring to him by his real name, Charles Dodgson.

She has been requesting an "Alice" dress for quite some time. However, she wanted it to be a dress she could wear all the time, not just for a costume. I fell in love with this pattern: Simplicity 2591

She chose a cotton/poly blend sateen out of my stash in the perfect shade of "Alice Blue". And I proceeded to try to get this dress done so she could wear it on the night of Showstoppers. Yet, in my haste, I did not make a muslin!!!! UGH! Alas, the dress was very close to fitting correctly but I set it aside for when I had time to fix it.

So, after my brain could breathe a little better, I altered the dress last night. The only alterations I made were to the raglan shoulder seams. I took them in by a 1/4" all around, thus bringing in the shoulder/neckline by 2 inches all around. Perfect fit!

I love the line of the sleeve and shoulder, very pretty and flattering.

I need to re-press the hem and set my clapper on it while it is still warm to set the hemline. I had to curve the hemline slightly to adjust for India's sway-back and the fabric is not holding that curve very well.

I still plan on making her a lacy apron to wear when she is in her "Looking Glass" mood. I promise to post modeled pictures soon!

Over all, I love this pattern and will definitely make it again.

A Week on the Lake, Vampires and Other Adventures

We arrived home yesterday!

Last Sunday, after working like crazy to get the first draft of the pattern out to testers, the girls and I loaded into my parent's car, along with our pillows, suitcases, I-pods, markers, coloring books and flip-flops. Yes, I took some smocking to do, but did not get much done. I had planned on updating my blog, Facebook and email, but didn't want to battle dial-up on a borrowed computer, so I just didn't.

Don stayed home, and frankly, I think he was looking forward to a week of quiet so he could work on his new CD. He got a lot done and it sounds great, but he was ready for his noisy family to come home yesterday.

So, last Sunday night, we stuffed ourselves into the car and left Grass Valley to head up to Ashland, where we spent the night with my mom's brother and sis-in-love. We got into Ashland at just after midnight and crashed into bed. The next morning, we hugged quick goodbyes and headed out for coffee on our way to Port Angeles, WA.

Now I must explain a few things here....

My parents are amazing travelers. They climb into the car and do not stop until they reach their destination. They may slow down to hit a restroom, switch drivers, or look for whatever is the "Objet de désir" of the trip. However, traveling is very different with me........and the girls, in the car. I do believe we should rename our trip "The Great Restroom Tour of the Western States". Yes. We would get loaded in, carseat and all, drive for a few miles, and then one of us would have to go again. It does not matter that we all went just a few miles back. There are bathrooms to see and we do not want them to feel unappreciated! Girls of the tiny blatter unite!
So, what should have been an eight hour drive, became a 12 hour drive. But hey! We got there in the same 24 hour day! Party on!

This trip was a dream of my mother's and her cousin Darlene for many years. My girls had never met their Washington cousins and, since so many would be graduating high school this coming year, time was getting away from us. So, Darlene and Jim graciously invited us to visit their cozy house on Lake Sutherland and get to know all the cousins.

Cousins Nikita and Madelyn were incredible with Ahnalin, teaching her to swim and fish and never letting on if they were bugged by the constant demands of an inquisitive four-year-old.

Me, wearing the "Lucy's Cloche" hat I tested for Dawn. More on this later. Don't I look cute?

India looked especially "Alice" so I had to take some pics. She loves "Alice in Wonderland".
My cousin Brent gave us a tour of the lake on his boat.

Like so many teenaged girls, India loves the "Twilight" book series. The series happens to be set in Port Angeles as well as the teeny town of Forks. So a tour of the "Twilight Sites" was included in our adventure. Now I must say, and I am sure there will be gasps, but I am not a lover of the "Twilight" books or the movie. Just not my thing...not enough colorful fabric or cheerful music I suppose. However, India was thrilled to see the sights.

Darlene bought the girls vampire teeth, and then we were given some more at "Sully's Burgers" after we ordered the "Bella Burger".

India glamour posing on Chief Swan's police cruiser at the Forks police station.

The girls outside of the "Cullen House" which was actually a super stinkin' cute bed and breakfast in Forks.
On Thursday, everyone came out to the lake house for dinner, boating and pictures. I saw some cousins I had not seen in probably 25 years, as well as some I had never met.

Darlene, with brothers and sisses-in-love and my parents.

All the kiddos!

Jeremy, India, and Brent will all turn 18 this year. They had never met before this trip!

Jeff, Wendy, me and my cousin Brent

Twins, separated at birth!
They talk the same (FAST!), they drive the same (ALSO FAST!), they shop the same (amazingly frugal and creative) and they both take the world by storm. They are unstoppable!

Yes, that would be my mom, the fabulous Barbara Jean waterskiing on Jeff's boat.

After all the fun of the week on Lake Sutherland, we packed up and headed back to Ashland on Saturday. Yes, we stopped at more restrooms, as well as several discount and tech stores. My Daddy was searching for a certain hard drive for his computer. But we did make it to Eugene in time for dinner at my all time favorite restaurant, Mazzi's. I forgot to take pics! What was wrong with me??? Then we continued to Ashland, where we stayed again with my aunt and uncle.

On Sunday, we went to Lithia park and played on the playground and in the creek.

We love the browsing the shops in town and Ahnalin got to pick out some little babies for her dollhouse because she had done such a good job in waking up dry all week! Yippee!!
Later in the afternoon, we had a bar-b-q at the little park near Trevor and Simone's house. I got to hold new baby Gabe too!

Later that night, Cameron let Ahnalin pet his horses but the pics did not turn out. Sad, because they were so cute.

Then yesterday morning, Garin, Sandra and the kids came over to see us before we left for home. Ahnalin wanted them all on the trampoline, but Cole and India were too cool to jump, I think.

This whole trip was incredible and so very fun. But there was a surprise blessing! Remember when I wrote about my grandmother's old sewing machine? Well, as it turns out, we did not sell it!!! I thought we did, but my aunt and uncle have had it in their garage for years!!!!! So when Don and I get a house again, we are going to bring it home! WOOHOO!!!!! I could not believe it was there all along, waiting for me. Tears of joy!

After that discovery, we loaded up the car and headed home to Grass Valley. We stopped in Corning and loaded up on olives at the Olive Pit. YUMMY!

And we actually arrived home in time for Ahnalin to start swim lessons. YAY! She was a champ. We picked up Kevin because India was just dying to see him.... oh....young love...

So, back to work. I will post some pics of bloomer skirt testers this week! YIPPEEEE!!!!

Test Pattern Went Out today!

Hi Everyone! I am shaking with nervousness, but I just sent out the first draft of the Monkey Girl Bloomer Skirt to testers! I feel almost, almost the same sense of terror and excitement that I felt while climbing aboard that plan to fly to China almost 4 years ago. I feel like I am embarking on such an exciting trip! In fact, I feel a little sick right now at the thought.
But this has been a dream of mine for a very long time.

I can hardly wait to see what my testers come up with while working on my pattern!

Thank you all who offered to test for me. If I did not use you this time, keep checking back, as I have more designs coming up!

Ballerina Girl

Last Saturday was Ahnalin's second dance recital. Last year, her first, she was only 3 years old. She dressed up so pretty in her tutu, and was placed in the very center of the line of tiny dancers. She knew the dance backwards and forwards. But I do believe that my precious girl was smacked with her first taste of stage fright. We are a family of performers and don't often get stage fright, but our little one had it! She stood stock still and just waved and smiled. It was adorable!!! Probably the funnier thing was that India and I were sitting in our seats in the audience doing the dance to encourage her! HILARIOUS!

But this year, she danced! She takes ballet and tap lessons from Laura Bishop and loves it. She prefers ballet, but is pretty good at tap too. We have not yet decided if she will continue in tap in the fall, because she usually won't dance tap in class. But when we saw the performance, she knew it and danced it perfectly. So who knows? She tells us that she is going to be a ballerina and a violinist when she grows up. She has been begging for violin lessons and we plan to start those this fall. But dance and music are definitely in her blood. Yes, my 4 year old is a FAR BETTER dancer than I am! I can barely walk and talk at the same time, but she is a graceful girl.

India did her hair for her. She did a great job but Ahnalin had to have it all down the second the recital was over.

This is Ahnalin and her teacher Laura Bishop. We love you teacher Laura!

My two beautiful girls! I love you both so much!

Ahnalin in her grass skirt for the tap number

They danced "ballet" to "Hawaiian Roller Coaster" Ahnalin is the third dancer to the right. I need a tripod. Can you tell?

Ahnalin is the third dancer to the right. Please excuse how wiggly the video is. I am a much better seamstress than videographer!
And they "Tapped" to "The Tiki Room".

We are leaving to pick up the girls at my parents house and will be bringing them back home tonight. This weekend has been crazy with all the driving, music and fun.

I will post Monterey pics later. And then tomorrow it is back to work on sewing!!

The First Time, Ever We Saw Her Face.....

June 27, 2005

After trying to adopt for many years, having programs close while we were in process, or matches fall through for different reasons, this was the day we finally saw the face of our precious Ahnalin.

She was "delivered" via a man in a brown uniform and a UPS truck.

Just 6 months and 17 days before, our dossier had been logged into the national adoption center in Beijing. After all of the disappointment, we were actually in that very blessed group of adoptive families who received a 6 month referral. Those days are long gone.

She was 10 months old at the time of referral, though her photos were of her at the age of 8 months. She looked very afraid in the photos, and not at all the confident happy child we know now. I wanted to get on the next plane to grab her and hold her and try to coax a smile out of those sweet lips.

Her referral paperwork stated that she was "not fond of quiet and likes busy". That was very, very accurate. It stated that her favorite food was watermelon....also very accurate. It also said she was a sound sleeper. That was very definitely NOT accurate.

And after all those years of praying to add a child to our family, a sister for our India, we were just beginning the hardest wait of all. Having seen that face, we now had to wait and wait, another 9 weeks, until we could board that plane and fly to her country, to finally hold our baby in our arms.

We are so blessed to have our precious little one. How has it been, that 4 years have flown by?

We love you so much!
